Most fishing advice focuses on what's happening underwater — structure, depth, temperature, lure presentation. All of that matters. But there's a layer of information available above the surface that most anglers walk right past without reading it.
Surface signs are often the fastest way to locate actively feeding fish, and they're available to anyone who knows what to look for. Here's how I read them.
Baitfish Activity
Baitfish behavior is the most reliable surface indicator of predator activity. When predators are actively feeding below, baitfish respond in predictable ways that are visible from the surface.
Nervous water: A patch of water that looks slightly different from the surrounding surface — more rippled, more active, with small baitfish dimpling the surface — usually indicates predators pushing baitfish from below. The baitfish are trying to stay near the surface to avoid the predators underneath. This is one of the most reliable feeding indicators there is.
Baitfish skipping: When baitfish actually break the surface and skip across it, predators are actively chasing them. This is an aggressive feeding event and the window is often short — get a lure into the middle of the activity immediately. A spinnerbait or topwater popper cast into a baitfish school being pushed from below will almost always produce a strike.
Baitfish schooling tightly: Baitfish that are schooled in a tight ball near the surface are usually doing so defensively — there's something below them they're trying to avoid. The predators may not be actively feeding yet, but they're in the area. This is a spot worth returning to during the next feeding window.
Bird Activity
Birds are the most visible surface indicator and the easiest to read from a distance. Different bird behaviors indicate different things.
Diving birds: Terns, cormorants, and other diving birds actively pursuing baitfish near the surface almost always indicate predator activity below. The birds are competing with the predators for the same baitfish. Get to that area quickly — these feeding events can move fast.
Birds hovering: A bird hovering over a specific area without diving is often watching baitfish activity below the surface. It hasn't committed to a dive yet, which means the feeding activity may be just starting. This is often a better indicator than active diving birds because you're arriving before the peak rather than after.
Birds sitting on the water: Birds resting on the surface are usually not indicating active feeding. They may be digesting a recent meal or waiting for the next feeding window.
Bass Boils and Surface Strikes
A bass boil — the swirl and disturbance created when a bass strikes at or near the surface — is the most direct surface indicator. It tells you exactly where a fish is and that it's actively feeding.
The mistake most anglers make is casting directly to the boil. By the time you see the boil and make the cast, the fish has already moved. Cast two to three feet past the boil and retrieve through the area where the fish was heading, not where it was. A swimbait retrieved through the area at the right depth will intercept the fish on its next pass.
Ripples and Current Breaks
Not all surface reading is about feeding activity. Ripple patterns on the surface reveal underwater structure that you can't see directly.
Current breaks — places where fast water meets slow water — show up as distinct lines on the surface where the ripple pattern changes. These transitions concentrate baitfish and the predators that eat them. In rivers and streams, current breaks are the most reliable structure to fish.
Upwellings — places where water wells up from below due to underwater structure — create circular ripple patterns on the surface. These often indicate submerged points, humps, or rock piles that hold fish. In lakes without obvious visible structure, upwelling patterns can reveal structure that doesn't show on maps.
Putting It Together
The most productive fishing sessions I've had started with five minutes of observation before making a cast. Standing at the water's edge and watching — looking for nervous water, bird activity, boils, current breaks — gives you information that no amount of blind casting will reveal.
